Little Muir’s Song, the San Diego Book Crawl, and more!

A lot has happened since I last updated the blog! I was interviewed by Buzzfeed and NPR’s Here & Now. I signed contracts to work on new picture books, announced in Publishers Weekly! I became the official ambassador of the San Diego Book Crawl (more below). And now — my latest news:

LITTLE MUIR’S SONG is now available at Yosemite National Park, just in time for Earth Day!

Written by THE John Muir, illustrated by me — it was an absolute dream to bring this manuscript and character to life for this board book published by Yosemite Conservancy. Every sale benefits Yosemite National Park!

If you can’t make it to Yosemite this summer to get your copy (and the other merchandise I’ve made for Yosemite!), this book will officially launch to bookstores everywhere on August 13th, its formal release date. Pre-order at your favorite indie bookstore or site.

However, if you’re here in San Diego, I’ve got great news for you.

The San Diego Book Crawl is an event happening this weekend — April 27, 28 and 29th — across nine independent bookstores in San Diego that have banded together to offer giveaways, prizes, and great events all weekend. And I’m the official illustrator / ambassador this year!

This weekend, I’ll be illustrator-in-residence at FOUR of those bookstores — and at one of them, the non-profit Library Shop which benefits San Diego’s public library system — there will be an extremely exclusive, extremely limited release of Little Muir’s Song available! Pick yours up and follow me to one of my events:

I’ll be illustrator-in-residence, drawing and painting at:

  • UC San Diego Bookstore on Saturday 4/27 from 10-2pm — with an array of boygirlparty merchandise!
  • Library Shop on Saturday 4/27 from 4-6pm — with an extremely limited, exclusive release of LITTLE MUIR’S SONG by John Muir
  • The Book Catapult on Sunday 4/28 from 11-1pm — with an array of boygirlparty merchandise!
  • Warwick’s on Sunday 4/28 from 2-4pm, my Warwick’s debut!

But, there’s more going on with the San Diego Book Crawl / Independent Bookstore Day festivities:

If you visit (and shop) at 5 participating stores, you’ll win a tote I designed!

And if you visit (and shop) at 7 participating stores, you’ll win this pin!

And if you visit (and shop) at more than that, there is a drawing for some pretty huge prizes!

Should be a great time!

Meanwhile, if you’re in the Los Angeles area anytime this summer, I’ll be in a robot-themed group show titled “ROBOT REMIX: ART SHOW” opening May 4th at sp[a]ce gallery Pasadena, curated by Mark Todd:

A necessary update!

It’s Small Business Saturday! While I’ve been busy working on my next books and haven’t kept the blog as current as I ought to, I’d be remiss not to mention how much direct support helps me as an artist. It enables me to keep investing in my own artwork and product ideas, to keep trying out new ideas, and to afford important things in my life like health insurance!

So, this post is all about ways you can support this particular artist. Without further ado:

Balance the Birds is out — and signed copies are available in the shop

Other ways you can support an author? Please consider writing a positive review on Goodreads or Amazon, request it from your library, share it with others, post about it on social media… lots of ways to support authors and artists!

But if cats were more your thing, check out this mug I made in collaboration with my friends at BuyOlympia:

and this Cat Bee keychain!

and the new clothing collection made in collaboration with Artisans Inc!

And, tons of baby clothing has been restocked — including Little Nature Lover snap suits, BuyOlympia glow in the dark Owl baby outfits, Bookworm in Training baby outfits, Snack Time Squirrel, the Otter family, and more!

And, of course, PINS! The perfect stocking stuffer.

And speaking of pins — I’m also running a fundraiser for Yosemite Conservancy — for which we’ve already raised over $500

So, the moral of the story is:

Think of artists and small businesses for holiday gifts this year! Or, if you’re aiming for zero waste this holiday, consider supporting artists like me through Patreon in exchange for glimpses into creative process! Or come support me in person at one of my local events coming here in San Diego or LA! (pop up shops, book signings, and art shows all on the calendar!)

Thank you for reading — that in itself is a valuable form of your support and one I am grateful for.

BALANCE THE BIRDS is almost here!

Balance the Birds by Susie Ghahremani

If you’re one of the first people to get a copy of Balance the Birds, please consider writing a review for Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or Goodreads — positive word of mouth helps independent artists like me tremendously!

If you’re in the San Diego area, I have lots of book signing events coming up! Please check the calendar.

Did you know this book’s aesthetic was inspired by my finch? Here he is: he looks like a marshmallow peep and is delightful. I’ve had him for 13 years! True story: I have four finches, and they are almost always “balanced” in their habitat — two on one perch, and two on the other. Hence my book idea!

New in the shop: pins, pins and more pins! A unicorn! A red panda! A budgie! A typewriter! A humpback whale! A tiny elephant! A bear that is also a ladybug! A badminton birdie! A toucan! A flamingo! Seriously, the list goes on. You better just check it out.

New Boygirlparty Enamel Pins!

In addition to finding my artwork for sale in my shop and on Etsy, I’m opening a Patreon page — a place where people can support my work as an artist on a pledge based basis in exchange for behind the scenes insight on my work and creative life!

In this collection, you’ll find a miniature koala, miniature elephant, moose, beaver, basset hound, baby chick, kangaroo, typewriter, whale, and badminton birdie!

Retailers interested in ordering these or other pins from my shop, please contact me!

But wait… there’s more!

If you’re in the San Diego area, NEXT WEEK, you can learn from me about the process of making of picture books *and* pick up an advance copy of Balance the Birds at the San Diego Festival of Books on August 25th!!

I’ll be in conversation with Andrea Zuill, Rafael Lopez, and Joy Chu at 12:25, followed immediately by a limited edition signing at the UCSD Bookstore’s booth at the Festival. Advance tickets required for the talk (but not the book signing!).

Balance the Birds officially releases on October 2nd — so this is an exciting early launch event! Come on down!

If you’re in the Los Angeles area, I have two paintings up at Giant Robot and GR2 Gallery — which you can also see online —  now through August 15th:

It’s been a busy, busy summer working on two new picture books, moving my studio, designing two new collections, attending the SCBWI conference, working on art shows, and more… but there’s going to be lots of BIRDS news soon, so stay tuned! Now’s a good time to sign up for the Boygirlparty mailing list.

Thanks for reading!
