Inspired by Persian Gardens: Memory Garden with author Zohreh Ghahremani and illustrator Susie Ghahremani

In a departure from the usual lecture format, Museum Librarian Kristi Ehrig-Burgess will interview mother-daughter creative team, author Zohreh Ghahremani and illustrator Susie Ghahremani. They will read their new children’s picture book, _Memory Garden, _then discuss the cultural inspirations behind it. They will explore the importance of Iranian gardens, where children played, through which streams flowed and where the gracious custom of drinking tea took place. Inspired by the Persian gardens of her youth, Zohreh Ghahremani writes of a grandmother’s gentle reminiscences as she works in her American garden with her granddaughter in this children’s book about storytelling, gardening, and immigration. Illustrator Susie Ghahremani has never been to Iran, but has had the good fortune to grow up in a family where its ancient culture is a natural part of daily life. Her brightly colored illustrations reveal an abundance of recognizable blooms and even some flowers that might bloom only on Persian rugs and inhabited by kind, gentle creatures, both animal and human. Copies of _Memory Garden _will be for sale in Shop Mingei. If purchased early, the Ghahremanis will sign them.
This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Cups and Connections.
About Zohreh Ghahremani Zohreh (Zoe) Ghahremani is a former children’s dentist and professor, award-winning author, and renowned voice of the Iranian diaspora who has been featured in media internationally. Her debut novel, Sky of Red Poppies, was a KPBS One Book and her sophomore novel, The Moon Daughter, won a Writer’s Digest Book Award for Best Literary Fiction in 2019. About Susie Ghahremani Susie Ghahremani is an award-winning illustrator whose artwork is exhibited and sold in galleries and boutiques internationally. A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she is the author-illustrator of STACK THE CATS — named best book of the year by Amazon and Kirkus — and the illustrator of many other books.
