SCBWI Conference, Shop Update, Art shows!

There’s been a big shop update! New notepads, pins, and WAX SEALS. These ideas and designs have been in the works for months and I’m just so excited to share them at long last! More about these for my patreons as soon as I’ve caught up on some other work on my plate!

^ Those are notepads for time boxing your tasks! I personally find assigning time to a task makes me more likely to get it done.

Also, I’m speaking at the SCBWI Conference on Friday, a conference designed specifically for professional and aspiring children’s book writers and illustrators. Register online for the conference at scbwi.org — My session is called “Making a Living as an Illustrator: Balancing Career, Values, Income & Play with Susie Ghahremani”

Books, California Art Shows, and more!

I’ve been far better at updating Patreon than I have been at keeping this section of the news current. My apologies!

The thing keeping me busiest and thing I am most excited to share is that I’m working on a new book with my mom, author Zoe Ghahremani! MEMORY GARDEN will be published in Spring 2024 by Godwin Books, an imprint at Macmillan. Here is the announcement from Publisher Weekly, shared on my Instagram with a very cute photo of my mom:

You can hear a little more about this project and the unusual way we came to work together on the SCBWI podcast, where I was recently a guest. And, theres more to announce in the realm of book news, as Im delighted to now be working with Lilly Ghahremani at Full Circle Literary as my agent on picture book projects and beyond!

I have a few art shows that have recently opened here in Southern California: The plant show at Giant Robot in Los Angeles, curated by Cassia Lupo, and The Summer Spectacular at Hey There Projects in Joshua Tree, curated by Mark Todd and Aaron Smith. (My works for the latter are here)

I’ve also recently shown at New England College; Nahcotta in Portsmouth, NH; and Tiny Showcase for a limited edition of prints benefitting We Need Diverse Books.

I recently created and released a Pride Pin for Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore with 100% of the proceeds going to the Trevor Project. Last year’s pin represents the genre of sci-fi, and this year’s represents fantasy (with a nod to one of my favorite books of all time, Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides)

I love working with the independent bookstores in my community and to use artwork for good, and enjoyed being the ambassador for Independent Bookstore Day / the San Diego Book Crawl this year, too!

There is so much more I want to share, but I am feeling overwhelmed just thinking about catching up here. So, I’ll leave you with a look of some of the recent additions to the shop, and a pledge to update here more often!

September in the Studio

Apologies for the much delayed update — what can I say except this past year has been hard. Hope you and yours are safe and well. FYI, If you subscribe to my Patreon, I update there frequently with glimpses into the projects I’m working on, my sketchbooks, etc. But here is a much overdue general update!! Thanks for you patience, and thank you especially to the art directors, creative directors, patrons, and customers who continue to support my artwork during this challenging time!

This week, a series of my paintings opened at Nahcotta in Portsmouth, NH. You can visit the available artwork online at this link, or in person in Portsmouth through the month.

Meanwhile, here in San Diego, San Diego Design Week has officially kicked off! On Saturday, September 11th at 11am, I’ll be leading a journaling workshop at the Library Shop (outdoors, socially distanced, masks and ADVANCE REGISTRATION required) — Free to register. Details at this link.

At this workshop, I’ll be sharing prompts from within my book, GROWTH: A Journal to Welcome Personal Change, which you can get online from my shop, with bonus page marking sticker sheets! I’ll be giving away a copy of the journal at my workshop as well, where sales will benefit San Diego’s Public Library via the Library Shop. I’ll be signing copies of my other books afterwards as well.

Speaking of places to shop with books, I recently painted a mural inside San Diego indie bookstore, The Book Catapult, located at 3010-B Juniper St in South Park!

I’ve been enjoying working on quite a few commissions this summer in general, and this was one of them. If you’d like to commission an illustration or an original painting, please fill out this form.
