Announcing the new Boygirlparty shop!
After many years of success on Etsy as Boygirlparty, I’m pleased to announce the re-launch of my independent webshop: http://shop.boygirlparty.com. The Boygirlparty® online shop features contemporary illustrated gifts including journals, cards, jewelry, and clothing. Each product is illustrated, designed, and shipped by me.
Since creating Boygirlparty® in 2001, I have been a pioneer in the online art industry and was among the first accounts on Etsy in 2005. However, in light of Etsy’s IPO news and public shift away from artisan crafting and handmade objects, I’ve decided to ramp up Boygirlparty®’s independent online presence to reduce reliance on what appears to be a changing marketplace.
As a fine artist, I depend on my online sales to support my ongoing innovation and creativity. At a time when independent artisans are becoming less visible on Etsy’s marketplace, I hope my new website allows shoppers to conveniently support a true small business selling products designed in-house as opposed to the generic, factory-made wares that are increasingly visible on Etsy.
Despite my success on Etsy, I have always maintained the need for diversified exposure. I’ve collaborated with other independents, including Poketo, BuyOlympia, Bungalow360, and Chronicle Books, to create new product categories and reach.
Artists are forced to be creative about distribution. My collaborations allow my work to reach an audience I could not reach independently: major retailers like Barnes & Noble, Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters and Mod Cloth. However, the support I receive directly from individuals, boutiques, art galleries, and museums is invaluable in terms of both support and fan base.
The Boygirlparty® Shop is where you can find my original artwork, which illustrates music, animals and nature as dominant themes, illustrated in mid-century themed color palettes. I will remain on Etsy, however, my priority is now the new Boygirlparty shop, where shoppers can find exclusive offers and first looks at new products and collaborations.
As alumna of the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), I recently returned to teach. Discussions about the changing world of art commerce with young students are necessary. As independent artists, if we are not guardians of our own careers, no one else will be.
